Legend of Ananthapura Lake Temple
According to legend, a Brahmin sage, Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam, used this area to make poojas and do penance. At one point, Lord Narayana gazed at the avatar of a boy in front of him. The sage grew up to be overwhelmed by the divine radiance that the child emanated and asked him who he would become. The boy suggested that he be orphaned. The sage took pity and provided the boy to be with him.The boy spotted a script in front of the sage saying that he would leave if he was humiliated. The sage consented to his script and greeted it with joy. The young boy served the sage for a while, but began to make jokes from his youth. When the jokes had been intolerable, the sage reacted with anger. The young boy, feeling humbled by the sage's reaction, proclaimed that he would leave and if the sage wishes to reappear, he will have to go to the wooded area of the Serpent God, Anantha. This wooded area is also known as Ananthankat.
The sage quickly realized that the boy was growing up to be an avatar of God himself and determined him. He quickly chose a cave in which the boy had disappeared. He decided on the route and reached the sea. While walking in the same way to the south, he reached an area near the sea which had Illipa trees (Mahua trees). It is true that here the sage watched the child disappear into a huge Illipa tree which immediately fell and took the form of Lord Vishnu resting on masses of snakes.
According to each different and interesting legend, a devotee of Lord Krishna, Sree Vilvamangalathu Swami, grows up to make a pooja for Krishna.Lord Krishna looked closely inside the avatar of a young boy and began to worry him disturbing the puja.
Architecture of Ananthapura Lake Temple
The Wonderful Temple was built in the center of a lake shaped by a permanent supply of spring water and was built in the center of that lake which spans over three hundred rectangular feet . It is claimed that the authentic idols of the sanctum sanctorum were made from an aggregate of over 70 herbs called kadusharkarayogam. By 1972, however, these idols had been traded for idols made from Panchaloha metals which had been donated through Kaanchi Kaamakoti Mathadipathi, His Holiness Jayendra Saraswathi Thiruvatikal. The contemporary idol of Lord Vishnu sits next to the serpent god, Anantha.
The excellently carved wooden structure of the Ananthapura temple depicts the incidents of the testimonies of Dashavatharam which are the testimonies of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Some of these testimonies are even painted with Navagrahas (9 planets) at the mukhtamandapam which is the portico of the temple. The splendid footbridge connects the Japanese rock and the namaskara mandapam and serves as the best passage to reach the Sreekovil, that is, the sanctum sanctorum of the complicated temple. The whole complex includes the Sreekovil, the Namaskara Mandapam, the Thitapalli, the JalaDurga shrines and the cave gate.
